We love green smoothies and they are so easy
to make. Even if you’re not committed
to a raw-food diet, green smoothies are a great addition to any
daily
menu. They are quick and portable, the
fruit provides vitamins and carbohydrates, for energy, and the greens provide
easily absorbed, much needed minerals.
I always use organic ingredients to make sure I’m getting as much
nutrition as possible.
I usually make a big smoothie in the
morning, eat or drink half for breakfast
and have the other half later on in
the day. The following is a basic
recipe
to get you started, but really the possibilities are endless.
Yvonne’s Classic Green Smoothie
Ingredients: 3 – 4 bananas
2 sticks of celery
2 handfuls of spinach, spring mix or romaine
leaves
1 cup blueberries or strawberries
water, optional
1 or 2 kale, mustard or dandelion greens, optional. I include these
greens when I have them on hand for the added minerals.
Directions: Blend all ingredients together in
a good quality blender. You can use a
regular blender but with this way of eating, a powerful blender will make your
life much easier. For more information
on the blender I use, please contact me.
I add very little water, if any, so it’s really more like
a pudding than a smoothie. I then pour
it over a cut up banana and top it with a couple of cut-up strawberries, a few
blueberries and two or three tablespoons of a ground up mixture of flaxseed,
sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds. This makes a very filling and satisfying meal.
To make the seed mixture, I grind up approximately ¼ cup
of each in a coffee grinder and keep it in a jar in the freezer. The reason I only grind up enough for two or
three days is that I don’t want to take any chances that it becomes rancid
before it gets eaten.
That’s
it, take a deep breath, give thanks and enjoy!
